Al Thakhira
Geographic Feature: Town
Description: The Arabic word ‘thakhira’ is derived from the word ‘thukhr’ which means to “save or to store for a period of time”. The authoritative Arabic language dictionary, Lisan Al Arab also defines the word as meaning to “save oneself ”. The area has been named according to a very interesting story. Many explanations have been given for the naming of the area. One explanation reveals that the area was so named because it was once an area where money and grains were stored. Others say that the area consisted of a warehouse where ammunition was stored. Another explanation given for the naming the area, was, that a man was lost at sea, where after being tossed and turned by the rough waves found himself safe and sound in this quiet and serene city. In a certain way the man felt that the city had saved him from the cruelty of the sea which may have been the reason for naming the area Al Thakhira.
