Umm Hawta
Geographic Feature: Village
Description: The Arabic word ‘umm’ means “mother” in English. Here in Qatar, the word is used to refer to an “area with specific qualities or features”. The other constituent of the name is the word ‘Hawta; meaning “fence”. Here, the area derives its geographic name from a range of whitish hills which surrounds the rawda in a circular fashion, like a fence. Hence, was termed Umm Hawta. A village, deriving its name from this very significant feature, exists in the region and is hence, referred to by the same name.
